Proper Treatment of a Garbage Disposal
Why do homeowners have garbage disposals? They work efficiently and are a convenient tool for disposing of waste right in your kitchen. When used properly, garbage disposals are an alternative to keeping a compost bin if you’re conscious about disposing of food scraps in the garbage. However, when not treated properly, they can emit a foul smell throughout your kitchen. First, how does a garbage disposal work?
How a Garbage Disposal Works
Contrary to popular belief, a garbage disposal does not work in the same way as a food processor or blender. There are no blades, but rather impellers, part of a rotating pump. As the impellers spin, they force old food scraps into a grind ring, where they are broken down into fine particles. Running water from your sink flushes these specks through the pipeline.
What Not to Put in a Garbage Disposal
When the following items enter your garbage disposal, they can create a clog or jam. A clog happens when food in the drain line blocks the flow of water flushing the waste out, while a jam is the result of an object becoming wedged in the grind ring.
Any Non-Food Items
Common items that you may have in the kitchen, such as rubber bands, sponges and twist ties should never be put in the garbage disposal.
Anything Fibrous
- Artichokes
- Celery
- Corn Husks
- Fruits peels, particularly banana
- Fruit or vegetable pits
- Potato or other vegetable peels
Grease or Oil
These liquids will create a film, preventing food scraps from entering the grind ring. The waste that does get through be ground less effectively.
Starchy Foods
The following starch-based food items will create a pasty substance in the garbage disposal:
- Beans
- Pasta
- Potatoes
- Rice
Guidelines for Proper Use
When you are about to run your garbage disposal, follow these four steps:
- Run cold water from the faucet
- Feed small amounts at a time to avoid a jam
- Do not put in anything fibrous, starchy or non-food
- Continue running the water for a few seconds after the grind is complete
To clean your garbage disposal, process lemon slices through it to kill germs and any foul odors. You can also use ice to sharpen the grind ring.
