Does Your Home Have Poor Airflow?
During summer, we may take our air conditioning for granted when it’s working well. There is no feeling quite like the cold rush of A/C when you come inside from the sweltering heat. When you don’t feel that sense of relief crossing the threshold of your home, there may be an issue with the cooling system.
What are some reasons your air conditioning has poor airflow?
Dirty Air Filters
Much like our homes should be regularly cleaned before dust particles accumulate, A/C filters need to be replaced throughout the season. Otherwise, cold air will have a more difficult time dispersing around your home. When an air conditioner is run often, the general rule of thumb is to clean or replace the filter monthly.
Dusty Or Loose Ductwork
If your home is equipped with ductwork, ducts are the vessel through which air is delivered to different areas of your home. When ductwork is leaking, disconnected or bent, air cannot be efficiently distributed. To find out if you have air duct issues, have an HVAC professional examine the ductwork and perform any necessary repairs.
Blocked Air Vents
This can happen often in rooms with throw rugs or an abundance of furniture. Something gets placed over the air vent, blocking the flow of cold air. To make sure no physical objects are interfering with your air flow, keep all items several feet away from the vents.
Poorly Maintained Outdoor Equipment
When there is a problem with air flow, it may not be coming from inside the house. The cooling process starts from the outdoor condenser unit, which cools and pumps air into the home. Oftentimes, outdoor condensers can be blocked by plants or become covered in debris but it’s crucial to maintain the area around your outdoor unit for proper airflow.
What Issues Does Poor Airflow Cause?
In addition to making your home uncomfortable, poor airflow can pose other problems, including:
- Decreased air quality
- Poor energy efficiency
- Increased energy bills
A weakly performing air conditioning system poses health risks to you and your family. While coughing and sneezing from increased allergens, you will also be faced with higher monthly bills. Rather than paying for your A/C to work twice as hard, get the professionals involved.
