4 Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes
Every year, we hear stories about burst pipes in homes and commercial buildings. When pipes freeze in cold weather, pressure can build up inside and lead to a rupture with costly cleanup and repairs. Before winter weather arrives, follow these simple tips to help prevent your pipes from freezing.
Keep the Heat On
When you’re gone during the day, it may be tough to justify leaving the heat on, but this can prevent pipes from freezing. A good rule of thumb is to keep the temperature above 50 degrees Fahrenheit while you’re away for extended periods. At this temperature, enough heat should be provided to keep the pipes warm and prevent water from freezing inside.
Allow Faucets to Drip
Frozen pipes burst as a result of pressure created between the blockage and faucet. To relieve this pressure and keep the pipes from freezing, open the faucet just enough for a slow drip. If the faucet has both hot and cold-water pipes, slightly open both taps.
Seal Cracks & Holes
Cold outdoor air that enters through holes and gaps can make a cabinet compartment even colder. Seal gaps around holes where pipes run through walls or floors, especially where the hole is letting cold air in. Apply caulk or spray foam insulation to fill the gaps inside and out.
Added Insulation
Install more insulation to exposed pipes, including ones in colder areas like the basement and attic. Pipes can be fitted with foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves to help decrease chances of freezing.
