Identifying 4 Common Plumbing Noises
Older homes and buildings tend to creak from time to time, but odd noises coming from your plumbing should not be ignored. A functional plumbing system allows us to run water, flush toilets and take warm showers. The last thing you want is to find yourself without these necessities, especially with summer on its way.
Spend more time enjoying the nice weather or running your business and less time dealing with plumbing issues. What do the following unusual noises mean?
1. Banging
If you hear a loud banging noise when you turn the water on, you could have what’s called a “water hammer” in the pipes. This sensation occurs when water changes direction, causing a giant pressure wave to form.
The banging noise results from stagnant pools of water unable to rush through your pipes. If left ignored long-term, your pipes could be irreparably damaged.
2. Rattling
When water is running from the sink, shower or hose, you may hear a soft shaking noise. However, if that noise sounds more like loud rattling, you could have loose pipes. Whether the mounting straps have to be tightened or completely replaced, get the professionals at M.J. Fahy & Sons involved. We service both residential and commercial plumbing clients!
3. Bubbling
When drains are improperly vented, you may hear the sound of bubbling air bubbles as water travels down them. This may not seem like a serious problem at first but left untreated, drain clogs can develop a terrible sewage smell. If the waste flushed away has nowhere to go, it will build up in your pipes.
4. Whining
While a screeching faucet is more of a nuisance than a plumbing emergency, it should be addressed sooner rather than later. The high-pitched whining sound you hear is likely the result of a loose part. Over time, this loose part could start a small leak that eventually leads to a flooding catastrophe. To be on the safe side, have the fixture repaired or fully replaced.
