4 Energy-Saving Habits to Improve Efficiency

dirty A/C filterWhen the monthly energy bill arrives, many homeowners are left scratching their heads. Where did all the energy consumption come from? Believe it or not, we do have some control over the amount of energy we use. By making the following adjustments, you can reduce your carbon footprint and keep more money in your pocket.

Turn Lights Off

When you leave a room, make it a habit to always turn the lights off. Also, be conscious of how many light fixtures need to be on at once. If you have recessed lighting in the living room, plus wall sconces and table lamps, chances are you do not need all these sources on.

During the day, choose natural light over artificial. According to ENERGY STAR®, doing so can reduce lighting expenses by 10 to 40 percent!

Seal Any Cracks

Make it part of your seasonal routine to check for drafts coming through the windows or doors. When warm air escapes during the colder months, your heating system must work harder to keep you warm. On the other hand, when warm air sneaks inside during the summer, your air conditioner can be overworked.

Air Dry Clothing

According to a 2014 study by the Natural Resources Defense Council, clothes dryers consume $4 billion in energy costs annually. Especially during warmer times of the year, take advantage of the sunshine to dry your clothes outside. If you do not have a clothesline or wish to put one in your yard, clothes can air dry indoors as well.

Perform Monthly HVAC Maintenance

It is important to check your HVAC systems on a regular basis to ensure they are functioning effectively. Once a month, clean or replace the air filter in your heating and/or cooling system. Dirty filters can result in an overworked furnace or A/C unit. Also listen for unfamiliar noises that could indicate an internal problem.
