Top Causes of HVAC Airflow Problems
For many homeowners in New England, HVAC systems are almost always on during the hot summer and cold winter seasons. Inevitably, you will experience problems with the airflow of your unit the more often it is used. Knowing what to look far and acting quickly can help you avoid more serious problems down the line, like compressor and other system failures that can result in expensive repairs or a full replacement.
Here are a few of the most common causes of airflow problems in HVAC units.
Obstructed Condenser Unit
Air conditioning systems have a condensing unit, often located outside or in a mechanical room. Outdoor units can become obstructed due to leaves and debris that accumulate around it. Indoor systems can be blocked by equipment and storage items. In either case, these circumstances can lead to the system overheating, since there is not enough air to access the system.
Blocked Vents & Registers
Common in office settings, where people rarely agree on a reasonable temperature, cabinets and other furniture often get pushed in front of the A/C and heating vents. These obstructions can cause the airflow to be compromised and can also become dangerous if a flammable item is moved in front of a heating vent.
Clogged Filters
Filters perform a very important job; these parts remove dust and debris from the air and keep it out of your equipment and ductwork. If your filter is overloaded or clogged, it can hinder your HVAC airflow, leading to hot or cold spots and stuffy air. Furthermore, debris in the equipment can damage parts.
Dirty Coils
Air conditioners have condenser coils which release heat that is being removed from your space. If exposed to the elements, the coil can get so dirty that it no longer releases heat. This causes your unit to work even harder to cool the room.
