Solve Common Heating Issues
New England winters can be brutally cold; the last thing a Connecticut home or business owner wants to hear is that the heat is broken! If you experience any of these common heating problems, don’t panic! We offer simple solutions to try before you run out and replace the system.
1. Clean the Air Filters
If your home or office doesn’t feel sufficiently heated, check the air filters. Dirty or clogged air filters restrict airflow, which forces your system to work twice as hard, but poorly. Improve performance by cleaning or completely replacing the air filters.
2. Inspect the Thermostat
Sometimes, the culprit of poor heating can be attributed to a faulty thermostat. If your thermostat reads a high temperature, but you don’t feel that the building is that warm, have the thermostat inspected to make sure it hasn’t malfunctioned.
3. Consider the Size of Your Space
Is your heat source too small for your home or office? Oftentimes, your system works fine; it’s simply not large enough to spread heat throughout the space. Depending on how significant the heat loss is, you may be able to use space heaters instead of buying a larger system.
4. What’s That Noise?
If you hear a rattling, banging or squeaking noise when the heat is running, it’s definitely a cause for concern. These noises could be the result of an obstruction within the system or an indication that your heat source is about to break down.
5. Schedule Professional Maintenance
Common heater issues can also arise from a lack of maintenance. If your system is not inspected by a professional at least once a year, it’s very likely that problems could be missed. As a home or business owner, keep the air filters clean and your ears open for any unfamiliar sounds between service calls.
Before considering a complete replacement of your current heating system, first check the circuit breaker for a blown fuse, the power source (i.e. outlet) and schedule an appointment for maintenance with M.J. Fahy & Sons. We have over 100 years of HVAC experience – contact us today!
