Preparing Your HVAC System for Cold Weather

technician inspecting a furnace On a cold winter night in New England, temperatures can drop well below freezing. When the weather forecast predicts negative digits, the last thing you want is to find your home without a working heat source. This is one reason why it is so important to prepare your HVAC system before the snow starts to fall. What steps can you take to be ready for winter?

Prepare Your Heating System

After you winterize your air conditioning unit, it is time to check the efficiency of your heating system. Furnaces are a common residential heat source that are easy to test. Keep in mind that if your furnace is more than 12 years old, it is time to consider replacing it!

Change Air Filters

Come wintertime, your heat has likely not been run for about 8 months! Dust, allergens and other debris gets build-up inside and out, covering the air filters and blocking heat from exiting. Air filters are easy to remove and gently clean to strip away these particulates.

Clean and Uncover Vents

Similar to the air filters, your vents should also be thoroughly cleaned. Whether they are ceiling, wall or floor vents, dust accumulates over time. Once they appear renewed, make sure that no furniture is covering the vents to prevent blocked airflow.

Program Your Thermostat

Don’t forget to reset your thermostat to heating! At the beginning of the winter season, set the temperature as low as you can to remain comfortable, but also save money on energy costs. Most programmable thermostats will also allow you to decrease the temperature when you’re not home during the day or overnight.

Listen for Noises

On a cool morning, turn your heat on to make sure it works and check for any odd noises. If the furnace rumbles, clicks or makes a high-pitched squeak, maintenance repairs may be necessary. Our experienced technicians are available to help!

Seal Windows and Doors

Cracks allow cold air to infiltrate your home in the winter, counteracting the warmth coming from your heat source! To avoid this, seal up any windows or doors with caulk prior to the start of the winter season.
