Troubleshooting an Air Conditioner

The dog days of summer are approaching fast; does your air conditioning work properly? Many people neglect to plan ahead and check their heating and air systems before the seasons change. So, there is a possibility that you could run into a problem the first time you turn the A/C on. If this happens to you on the first 90º summer day, when can you troubleshoot the issue on your own and when should you call the professionals at M.J. Fahy?

1. If the Condenser Unit Isn’t Running

The A/C condenser plays an important role in the cooling process. It transfers the liquid refrigerant so it can be blown out of the fan as air. When it isn’t running:

  • Make sure the unit is plugged in by checking the power source
  • Look for a blown fuse or circuit breaker
  • Adjust the thermostat about five degrees lower

When these troubleshoots don’t work, it is a sign that you need to get a professional involved. One of our experienced HVAC technicians can replace the motor.

2. If the Cooling Isn’t Reaching Maximum Potential

If your A/C is running, but you remember the air flow being stronger last summer, there is a quick internal fix that might solve this issue.

Remove the evaporator, which works to filter out heat, and clean it. Then, let the A/C run for a few hours and see if you notice an improvement. Keep in mind that if the temperatures outside are extreme, it makes it more difficult for the evaporator to work at maximum efficiency.

3. If the A/C Shuts On and Off

A unit that shuts off at random times can become frustrating very quickly. Check the thermostat to make sure the reading is accurate, then inspect the condenser. It could be dirty or obstructed in a way that is preventing the refrigerant from flowing at a constant rate.
