Essential Maintenance for Your Air Conditioner
Like most home appliances, your air conditioner will last a lot longer if you maintain it properly. You don’t need to be an expert repair technician to perform basic maintenance that will help keep your A/C unit clean and free of debris. By performing these tasks, you’ll not only save money on energy, but you’ll also extend the lifespan of your air conditioner, which saves money on an early replacement.
Before performing any cleaning tasks or repairs on your A/C unit, completely turn off the machine. Working around live electricity is very dangerous for non-professionals.
The following maintenance tips apply to a whole-home air conditioning unit.
Remove the Fan Cage
Using a screwdriver or wrench, remove the fasteners and lift the cage away from the top of the unit. Using your hands, clean leaves and other debris from the interior. You can also use a wet/dry vacuum to get the dust and dirt out. Many A/C problems occur when the air is not circulating properly, which can be caused by debris blocking the air flow. Regular cleaning will help avoid this problem.
Wash the A/C Fins
With a strong stream from a garden hose, spray through the fins from the inside out to completely clear away dirt that can caught between the fins. You can also use a commercial cleaning spray on tough dirt and debris. Avoid using a pressure washer, since the power can damage the fins.
Check the Condenser
Over time, the pad the condenser sits on can begin to slip as the soil settles beneath it. An unlevel air conditioner can cause the compressor within to fail. Use rot-resistant shims to bring the condenser back to an even level.
Change the Filter
The filter in your A/C unit should be changed at least twice a year. It’s best to replace the filter right before the cooling season, but you may want to replace it more often.
By following these regular maintenance tips, your air conditioner should be ready for consistent use and have a much longer life span. If your air conditioner needs more serious repairs, contact M.J. Fahy & Sons today!
