Tips to Save On A New Air Conditioner

outdoor air conditioning unitSpring in New England is here and before we know it, we’ll be switching our homes from heat to air conditioning. When your air conditioner is inspected by an HVAC professional, you may soon realize it’s time for a new unit.

Before fretting about the initial cost, we have a few tips to help you save on the purchase and future energy use!

Upfront Cost Savings

Before a new air conditioner is installed and running in your home, take advantage of these upfront savings.

Energy Rebates

Look for HVAC manufacturer rebates being offered this time of year. Most likely, you can score a good deal on an energy-efficient unit, which should be your primary choice for future savings as well.

You may also qualify for a local rebate for renewable and energy-efficient upgrades made to the home. These programs vary by state; find out what you could save through Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency® (DSIRE).

Tax Credits

New HVAC systems installed after December 31, 2016 may qualify for a residential renewable energy tax credit. If you are a local resident, companies like Energize CT offer tax incentives for the installation of renewable energy sources.

Future Cost Savings

After you have paid for a new air conditioner, you can continue to reap the rewards of your investment in an efficient unit.

SEER/ENERGY STAR

Want to owe less on future utility bills? We recommend a new unit with a high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. SEER measures how much cooling a system puts out for each unit of energy it consumes. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the air conditioning system. When your unit requires less energy to run smoother, you receive lower monthly bills.

To be ENERGY STAR certified, an A/C unit should have a SEER of 15 or higher.

HVAC Zoning

If your kitchen is stifling, but the upstairs bedrooms are cool with the unit on, your air conditioner could be overworked in the wrong areas. An HVAC zoning system includes an individual thermostat in every room, so you can control which areas are getting the coolest air. Zoning can help reduce wear and tear on the unit, which helps lower energy costs.
