Preparing Your HVAC System for a Winter Storm

Man applying caulk to a windowIs your HVAC system prepared to handle cold temperatures and frozen precipitation? Some older units may have to work twice as hard during a winter storm to keep you warm. Living in New England, residents can expect there to be several snowstorms before spring arrives.

Consider the following 5 tips to ensure your heating system runs efficiently, so your family can wait out the storm in comfort.

Perform Regular Maintenance

It is recommended we replace our system’s air filters at least four times a year but during winter, it doesn’t hurt to clean dirty filters monthly. During this process, you can check to see if the filters need to be replaced sooner, especially if the unit has been running overtime.

Insulate Your Home

Many homes can experience drafts from poorly sealed windows and doors. Over time, the sealant wears down and cold air can seep in through the cracks. When this happens, properly insulate your home with caulk – a waterproof sealant – draft stoppers and foam or fiberglass insultation.

Keep the Heat Pump Clear

Although most outdoor heat pumps are designed to prevent the accumulation of precipitation, make sure the top of your unit is clear of heavy snow and ice. Some homeowners choose to place a sturdy piece of wood over top to make removal easier.

Create Clear Pathways

If couches, area rugs or other objects are blocking your air vents, there may be nothing wrong with your heating system at all. Rather, these obstructions prevent even air flow. No matter how efficiently your unit operates, blocked vents trap warm air and can make your home feel uncomfortably cool.

Replace an Old Unit

If your furnace or boiler is 15 – 20 years old, it likely needs to be replaced with a newer model. Especially when the unit has not been regularly serviced, it may no longer work to maximum efficiency. If you hear unusual noises when the system is running or notice an increase in your monthly energy bill, have the HVAC unit replaced by the professionals at M.J. Fahy & Sons.
